Interview by Robert Cavuoto
This past July, multi-instrumentalist Robin Taylor Zander of Cheap Trick released his debut solo album, The Distance, on Jack Douglas’ Confidential Records.
The 11 songs on The Distance reflect his musical lessons well-learned through his father, Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Gerry Garcia, and The Who. The songs on The Distance were a labor of love written over a period of time from 2015 to 2019, with some songs even dating back to RTZ’s tenure in Nashville with the band Smile. It’s an album rich in pop melodies, awash in smoothly textured instrumentation and soaring, layered vocal harmonies. Melody, song structure, and lyrics are perfectly intertwined, a classic case of making music greater than the sum of its parts.
On October 28th, Robin is teaming up with Jack Douglas for a show at the Berlin Brewing Company in Berlin, NJ. Robin will be performing his entire solo album acoustically or with keyboards, while Jack shares stories from his illustrious career as a record producer on the iconic albums by John Lennon’s Double Fantasy, Aerosmith’s Toys in the Attic, Cheap Trick At Budokan, New York Dolls, Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies, and many more.
