On an unusually warm December evening, Michigander secured the opening slot for Andrew McMahon and his “New Friends” tour during its highly anticipated Chicago stop at the historic Riviera “Riv” Theater.
Commanding the stage, Michigander, led by Jason Singer, kicked off their performance with “Better,” “In My Head,” and “Reds,” immediately captivating the audience with Singer’s impressive, melodic vocals and charismatic stage presence. The energetic atmosphere set the tone for the entire show.
Engaging in some banter and greetings with the crowd, Michigander continued with the track “Saturday,” with Singer playfully emphasizing the irony of singing about Saturday on a Friday night.
Comprising Jason Singer, guitarist Jake LeMond, bassist Connor Robertson, and drummer Aaron Senor, Michigander took the audience on a musical journey with songs like “The Other Way,” a cover of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and “East Chicago, IN.”
Wrapping up the setlist, the crowd maintained their enthusiastic support through “Superglue,” “Misery,” and the closing performance of “Let Down.” Michigander skillfully held the audience’s attention throughout the ten-song set, successfully priming them for the upcoming Andrew McMahon performance. The venue was filled with an electric atmosphere, as hundreds of people sang along under vibrant lights, reveling in the joy of live music.
Prior to the show, I was unfamiliar with Michigander, but attending and immersing myself in their music was thoroughly enjoyable. I eagerly anticipate their next appearance in the Chicagoland area. Jason Singer’s infectious positivity and remarkable talent have swiftly turned me into a fan, and I look forward to following the band as they release new music and announce future shows.
