The seventh full-length studio album from Italian heavy/power metal masters Airborn, ‘Lizard Secrets Part Three – Utopia‘, is quite the tongue twister after a few drinks. This record serves as the concluding chapter in the ‘Lizard Secrets‘ trilogy—a series that delves into futuristic challenges through science-fiction narratives.
Starting with 2018’s ‘Part One – Land Of The Living‘ and followed by 2020’s ‘Part Two – Age Of Wonder‘, this trilogy represents a sci-fi journey through humanity’s possible futures. The band explores themes of conflict, hope, societal control, and what truly defines utopia, all delivered through power metal’s signature elements: epic song structures, lightning-fast guitar work, and soaring vocals that help tell these ambitious stories.
The second album’s approach resonated widely, focusing on technological marvels, discovery of new worlds, and the inherent risks these advancements bring. AI fears, anyone?
This third installment maintains that approach, immediately captivating listeners with opener ‘Kings Of Melody‘—a surge of thunderous rhythms, exhilarating duelling guitars, and wonderful choruses. For any power metal enthusiast, it’s everything you could want.
The new album’s thematic focus centers on examining a “perfect” society concept. This “Utopia” story presents a world free from crime, hunger, and fear, yet achieved by sacrificing individual freedom, imagination, and belief. It serves as a warning about pursuing security while abandoning the human spirit. Reminds me of Scunthorpe… but I’m getting off track.
Among my personal favorites is ‘In Utopia‘, which promises to explore this seemingly perfect world’s darker aspects, where “the Board will take care of your needs and your dreams and your mind.” Nothing alarming about that whatsoever!
