Spawned out of South Bend, Indiana come Chokesetter with their debut album which was actually released in 2020 but has now secured a release through Pavement Entertainment. They say they play hard hitting stoner with no BS along with feel good rock n roll and swinging blues.

Opener ‘Motorboater’ displays all of the above with some fine riffage from guitarist Steve Dickson and the well abused voice of Jessi Maule. ‘Barnburner’ is a bit wordy but runs on a great groove before the jagged attack of ‘Bela Lugosi’ and the fuzz bomb intro of ‘Eden’ which then becomes a spoken word stream of consciousness and a hard-hitting reply. ‘Artemis Interlude’ is a dreamy instrumental piece that lets us catch our breath before the doomy World Eater’ and the rock n roll of ‘These Stones’ which gets your hips moving. Jason Funkhouser’s bass groove introduces the mighty Red which is a love song believe it or not about how Jessi Maule met his wife. Not exactly sentimental but a love song, nonetheless. Funkhouser is at it again with another spidery bass line to open ‘The Son Will Rise’ which becomes a proper chugger. Final track is a live recording of ‘21’ from The Cobra Lounge and shows these guys can do it live too.

I enjoyed this – full of big riffs and grooves and I particularly enjoyed Jessi Maule’s voice which has a real lived in and abused quality about it. Make no mistake the guy can sing. Stoner with a dash of southern rock what’s not to like?
