Hailing from Wunstorf, Germany, Grailknights are a theatrical power metal act established in 2002. They initially went by Galactic Grailknights before shortening their name and adopting a superhero concept. The band purports to originate from the made-up Grailham City, where they supposedly live in Castle Grailskull—an obvious reference to Castle Grayskull from ‘He-Man & The Masters of The Universe’!
Calling it pure entertainment would be putting it mildly. I absolutely adore this group, and after witnessing their performance in London (an uncommon journey across the Channel for them), I wholeheartedly suggest seizing any chance to experience their live performance. It’s like combining ‘Power Rangers’, ‘Star Wars’ and the Marvel Universe. This mashup thankfully appears to have sidestepped legal action from those properties, though it must be borderline. Whether it’s parody or not, these musicians clearly know their references inside out.
Their seventh studio record includes (though not on the version I received for review) an ABBA cover of ‘Super Trooper’, and I can’t imagine a more appropriate track to include for their fanbase. Grailknights fundamentally create disco-infused metal, which nobody can resist. You might be at a festival watching Lamb of God, Gojira and Machine Head, yet still make room to collectively jump around to numbers like ‘Grailforce One’, ‘Grail Gym’ and the ridiculous ‘Weekend Ninja’. You’ll chuckle, you’ll move, you’ll discover these tracks are more familiar than your cherished Slipknot collection, and yet you won’t mind because this represents pure joy. Listen up kids, perpetual anger isn’t necessary!
Speaking of enjoyment, I’ll leave you to interpret what you might experience from ‘Animated Love’ or ‘Mighty Metal Maiden’. If metal aimed at teenage boys were its own category, this would reign supreme (of the pile of unusually stiff…socks). They refer to their supporters as the “Grailknights Battle Choir” who consistently respond to the summons, and for that I’m incredibly thrilled because this is simply fantastic entertainment. Seven records deep… they warrant massive success, just like your Mum.
