So it turns out it’s not German, but Germán—that accent over the á changes everything. Rather than being a country-themed project as I’d assumed, Germán Pascual is actually a singer whose remarkable journey and extraordinary abilities have established him as an iconic presence in metal music. With roots in Uruguay, upbringing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and residence in Stockholm, Sweden from his teen years onward, Germán possesses the kind of voice that draws comparisons to Ronnie James Dio, Jorn Lande, and Geoff Tate. So how am I only discovering him now? I must’ve been living under a rock because this guy can seriously S I N G!

He released his debut solo record in 2012, titled ‘A New Beginning’, which was ‘quickly’ succeeded by its follow-up in (ahem) 2025—the one we have here. Having performed with Narnia, Minds Eye and Divinefire, it’s now obvious I’m familiar with his previous projects, just not the specific name tied to those band lineups. That’s one miss on my part, I’d say.

After catching up via bios while playing ‘Through Fire and Brimstone’ through my sound system, a grin spreads across my face as the Dio-inspired elements flow through the track. Up next, ‘The Great Divide’ brings an almost industrial rhythm, demonstrating the vocalist’s impressive ability to adapt to any musical direction.

‘Breach My Despair’ features a tribal rhythm, with basslines mirroring the kick drums that cause the room’s walls to pulse with power. Then comes ‘Perfect Harmony’, a song that shows up several times across the album, purely because Germán has such strong connections and a worldwide following that’s been anticipating this second solo release for more than ten years. Consequently, ‘Perfect Harmony’ is presented in English, Portuguese and Spanish to cover all bases and make every fan feel valued.

Following such an extended gap (between solo releases anyway), expectations can frequently exceed what’s delivered, but fortunately Germán has produced something magical and his talent shines through brilliantly.
