Hollow Leg were formed in Florida in 2009 and say this release, their first full album which is two previous EP’s stuck together, is both the soundtrack to Armageddon and a map to survive it. Apparently, they channel doom, grunge, hard rock, space rock and old school metal in a singular vision of destruction.
Opener ‘Poison Bite’ is a slow, doomy start that takes its time getting going. It’s a big grinding riff over a hoarse vocal that just stomps around in lead filled boots before ‘Sick Days’ ups the pace on a monumental groove and another glass gargling roar. ‘Funeral Storms’ brings back the doom as it chugs along before the stoner swing of ‘Another Day Dying’ gets us to the spacy psych of ‘Holy Water’ where singer Scott Angelacos shows the clean side of his voice which is multi-tracked and ‘watery’. It’s back to the stoner on the rifftastic groove of ‘Last Tribe’ which is continued on ‘Bury Our Kings’ before the grinding ‘Red Skies’. ‘Ride The Wave/Dig The Grave’ comes out on a steady beat courtesy of drummer John Stewart and Tom Crowther banging his bass whilst guitarist Tom Crowther just grinds out his down tuned riffery to complement Angelacos’ vicious roar.
I’ll be honest this took me a couple of listens, but I got there in the end. It’s simple and effective and worth anybody’s time if they like stoner/doom.
