After releasing two quite good albums under the moniker of DECEMBER’S COLD WINTER, the boys decided it was time for a fresh start and duly renamed the band to ADVENT OF BEDLAM. While I do like the new name better, neither are true reflections on what sort of music they play. The band has been classed around the traps as melodic death metal, which I agree with to an extent, but for me I’d rather class them as just death metal, because I think the melodic aspect is quite slim and takes away from the actual all out assault of BEHOLD THE CHAOS.

As far as I can see, the only fault with this album is that there is nothing very original about it, but I’m sure that won’t bother most people into the genre, especially when everything else about the album is done so well. The vocals sit somewhere in between full blown cookie monster growls, and black metal screaming to make a great sound that is one hundred percent aggression and will make the hair on the back of your neck stiff. The guitar work is fast & furious, and while some of the riffing is quite basic in its essence, the ferocity that they are played at makes them sound more technical than they really are. The real highlight of the album comes in the drumming and whether it’s the insanely fast and accurate blast-beats, or the mesmerizing cymbal display, the drums are a pure treat to follow.

The first real highlight track comes quite early with THE STENCH OF YOUR FAITH really showcasing the talent in the band and the high quality of the songwriting. THE DARKEST ALLIANCE, DOGMATIC APPREHENSIONS and VESSELS OF SIN also go a long way toward forcing this band into regular rotation in my CD player.

BEHOLD THE CHAOS is pure death metal the way it was meant to be played, but with just a small touch of melody. It differs though in the fact that the melody is provided by the guitars and there is no compromising in the vocal department like most of the modern day death metal bands do. If you are into death metal of the traditional variety like MORBID ANGEL and DEICIDE, and maybe even AT THE GATES, ADVENT OF BEDLAM should soon come across your music radar. If not, seek them out anyway and I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
