Seemingly out of nowhere the Swedish band Angeline released last year a very good Melodic Rock record titled “Confessions”. The band surprisingly has had a long history expanding over 20 years together, and in in 2007 when the former members of Angeline decided to perform a one-off show on this special day to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band. This event here led the group to get back together and released their debut studio debut.
After being well received by the Melodic Rock scene, the guys return to formidable shape with their sophomore follow up “Disconnected”. The best trait the band brings to the table is their modern rock approach on each of these typical Melodic Rock undertones, that was something that showed itself through on their debut. It helped that most of the record had little fillers at all.
Angeline is a band comparable to past Melodic acts like Harem Scarem, and current mainstream rockers like the Foo Fighters and 3 Doors Down. As hard as it is to blend into to today’s current rock scene with it’s many fail acts and carbon copy pawns that dominate the scene now a days, is hard to find a band that can manage to sound “new” in sound but not confiscate their hard rock edge, and Angeline does exactly this.
The group key is always their melodic choruses in their music, and on songs like “I Had Enough”, a shot out loud anthem with a modern edge, this trait resonates perfectly. The kicks keep coming straight at ya with a mid tempo burner in “Run Run Run” a boogie style rock tone dominates this slinging tune. Things slow down just a bit on the melo ballad “Found”, which has a similar characteristics to past Harem Scarem ballads, very cool song. The vocals of lead singer Jocke Nilsson are excellent and pulling double duty as guitar man makes even better. The title track has a little of that Bon Jovi influence all over it, with a rising chorus and it sounds like a talk box is being used either way the effect works pretty on this hard edge tune.
This release lands on my top list for best Melodic Rock releases this year and with a solid production and mixing courtesy of the band’s guitarist Jocke Nilsson and mastering by Björn Engelmann (Stage Dolls, Wig Wam, Within Temptation, Friestedt-Williams), it reassures a crisp sound on each track. Above average songwriting keeps the swing of each song meticulously vibrant, and the soaring vocals of Nilsson are more then capable to carry a melodic hook. If you want quality Hard Rock with Melodic edges, and a unique modern rock sound, look no further then the new album form Angeline. Recommended!!!
