Few endeavors can withstand a two-decade hiatus. The return of “Balance of Power” has been a subject of speculation for years, with fans eagerly awaiting any sign of musical resurgence. Unexpectedly, after two decades of silence, they reemerge onto the Metal scene.
Having been a fan of this British ensemble since their inception, I vividly recall the commanding presence of American vocalist Lance King during his tenure from ’97 to 2001. Subsequently, the introduction of John K on vocals for “Heathen Machine” marked another notable chapter, characterized by remarkable guitar work and powerful vocals. Then, silence descended, leaving fans in anticipation for their return.
Now, after twenty years, they resurface with a new vocalist, fronted by the dynamic Hazel Jade, previously known for her contributions to bands like JoanOvArc and Elevation Falls.
Admittedly, I harbored apprehension; unfamiliar with Hazel and noting the absence of familiar faces among the guitarists, such as Pete Southern. Nonetheless, it’s heartening to witness Lionel Hicks and Tony Ritchie steering this new chapter forward. I will make a note that both Southern did add additional guitars, and former vocalist John K added additional keyboards, a nice touch by the band to involve them in the record even if they are not full time members no longer.
Following their recent signing with Massacre Records, their forthcoming album release on April 19th signals their full reentry into the spotlight. From the onset, it’s evident they mean business. The signature blend of melodic metal, classic rock, and grunge remains intact, underscoring their distinctive sound.
The album commences with “Last Man Down,” characterized by its crunchy riffs and potent choruses—a hallmark of their style. “Never Be Here Again” unfolds with a progressive tapestry of rhythms, accentuated by Hazel’s impressive vocal prowess. Noteworthy is “Abyss,” which harnesses a modern and heavier sound, punctuated by captivating keyboards and guitar interludes. The album concludes with the epic “One More Time Around the Sun,” a seven-minute opus brimming with crescendos and evocative melodies.
Overall, the album showcases the aptitude of Hazel Jade, capturing the essence of “Balance of Power” while infusing a fresh vibrancy. To longtime fans, it may require detachment from past vocalists, but embracing this new iteration proves rewarding. For enthusiasts of melodic metal, the album offers a rich tapestry of razor-sharp guitars and resonant choruses.
With Toby Jepson’s involvement in production and the introduction of Hazel to the lineup, “Balance of Power” embarks on a quest to reignite their flame in the realm of Metal. Their return serves as a testament to resilience and artistic evolution, ensuring they do not fade into obscurity.
In conclusion, “Balance of Power” demands attention—a reminder of their enduring legacy and a harbinger of new horizons in the Metal genre.
