A rebirth. That’s what Roses From The Deep feels like – a rebirth for Marko Hietala. After the darker, more introspective Pyre of the Black Heart, with its heavy leanings towards Finnish lore and that dark forest vibe, this album feels lighter, more positive. Pyre of the Black Heart, as the international version of his debut was known, felt like a cathartic exercise, a way to process life’s upheavals, including his departure from Nightwish after two decades. The wait for the follow-up was longer than hoped, but the result is a more upbeat collection. Tracks like Frankenstein’s Wife, Left on Mars, and Proud Whore burst with energy. You wouldn’t typically see these titles together – a prog anthem alongside a track with a punkish edge. But under Marko’s touch, they become uniquely his. I find myself unconsciously singing along to “I’m the proud whorrrrrreeeeeee,” much to my wife’s (I think) amusement.

The album seamlessly blends old and new styles, showcasing the band’s unique sound. Guitarist Tuomas Wäinölä’s work significantly contributes to the modern vibe and overall structure. Keyboardist Vili Ollila and drummer Anssi Nykänen deliver a truly special and unique performance alongside Hietala. A special treat awaits Nightwish fans: the appearance of Tarja Turunen on Left on Mars. Hearing these two voices together again is a truly joyful experience.

Roses From The Deep is a refreshing and positive step forward for Marko Hietala, showcasing his artistic growth and versatility.
