Among global metal scenes, Finland stands as a powerhouse, boasting roughly 42.61 metal bands per 100,000 residents despite being only the 65th largest country. Whether it’s power metal, epic metal, folk metal, hard rock, black metal, or death metal, Finnish musicians excel across all subgenres. Into this rich tradition steps Dragonknight, bringing their distinctive power metal approach.

Their commitment to the genre’s aesthetics shines through their members’ names – Lord Gryphon, Lord Kharatos, Lord Solarius, Lord Othrakis, and Lord Salo Khan. The band’s visual identity, from their name to cover art, perfectly complements their sound. They’ve crafted a conceptual album exploring grand narratives of Dragonlords, heroic battles, and mythical realms – elements sure to resonate with genre enthusiasts.

The music’s transportive power became apparent during my nighttime drive – momentarily mistaking oncoming headlights for stars, I found myself swept into their mythical realm of heroic tales. Though immersive, such disconnection from reality perhaps warrants saving the rest of the album for home listening over mead, rather than while driving at 70mph on the motorway. Dragonknight succeeds in their mission to create an escapist fantasy metal experience, complete with battle-ready anthems and epic storytelling.
