When the world shut down it left many bands out there in the world of Music not knowing what to do next. Many chose the right way, no pun intended, others decided to do virtual gigs and many had pending albums that were yet to be realized before things came to a halt. Finally, many bands have been able to release long-awaited material that could never be before. You add that to the crowded touring schedules and is mere insanity at the moment.
Eva Under Fire the Detroit Rock City band is one of those groups. Led by front lady Eva Marie (Amanda Lyberg), who moonlights as Rocker at night, but is a Therapist by day. The long-awaited release “Love, Drugs & Misery” delivers hot on the heels of already garnering success with their single “Blow” featuring Ice Nine Kills Spencer Charnas. The single has over 6 million streams on Spotify alone. Vocalist Ava Marie has been also featured in the horror flick “The Retaliators” alongside a host of other big Rock names in the industry. The new album has been years in the making, and it’s their sophomore release since their debut in 2015.
But the accolades alone are one thing, how would the music measure up?
I have to honestly say that I was most interested in the writing/lyrics here as I can only imagine that being a Therapist can offer a new perspective on things that we as humans deal with every day; such as Life, Death, Grief, etc etc. Is easy to pick up on some of these things in the music of Eva Under Fire, as it perviates throughout the songs on the new album.
Songs like “Misery”, “Heroin(e)” and “Comatose” all hit on a different level when you read into the lyrics. The chorus lines in “Mysery” are top-notch, and the break before the brief guitar solo is excellent. I’m digging the more power ballad-esque sounds of “The Strong” as it offers a powerful message in its silver lining. Even with a more commercial vibe, this one sounds like another hit for the guys. Single for “Heroin(e)” was a preferred choice by Better Noise as the lead single and is easy to see why when you read on Amanda’s background, another great and powerful song.
Sonically speaking the guys play a tight mix of hybrid of rock, metal, pop, and classic rock. Is it something new or groundbreaking? No, not really, but the quality of the songs is noteworthy, the high-power vocals of singer Eva Marie are certainly alluring, and like we mentioned before, the writing presents a unique perspective on topics that relate to mental health and personal relationships and turmoil and if you know about Amanda’s past, you will know the music hits on a very personal level.
As an overall package, the record has certainly been polished and produced to hit the charts and after a long wait and a few years of cutting their teeth in the underground scene, it’s a welcome sight to get to this level. Not surprised at all if you keep hearing more from Eva Under Fire, well deserved, and more to come!!!
