The album from Memories of Old kicks off with ‘The Turn Of A Page’, an intro lasting 1 minute and 11 seconds that evokes the atmosphere of a cinematic Hollywood epic. This opening flows seamlessly into the title track—a song whose name bears notable similarity to an iconic AOR classic!
However, that’s where the parallels end. While the titles may echo one another, Journey’s legendary track delivers themes of belonging, hope, and perseverance wrapped in nostalgic, uplifting tones that have made it one of history’s most-streamed songs… (quite the benchmark to follow)… Meanwhile, Memories of Old present us with themes of inner strength, heroism, and fantasy through a motivational, cinematic approach featuring orchestral elements, powerful vocals, and lyrically-driven fantasy storytelling.
Having addressed that comparison early on, MoO’s latest release carries forward the band’s fantasy narrative tradition while incorporating more inspirational and emotional undertones. The lyrical content spans themes of unity and heroism in songs like ‘Guardians of the Kingdom’, discovering hope while escaping darkness in ‘Fly Away Together’, and exploring transformation and rebirth. This last theme particularly resonates throughout founder Billy Jeffs’ work, appearing multiple times including in ‘Life Begins Again’ and ‘Rebirth: An Epilogue’.
Noah Simmons delivers vocals that perfectly suit the album’s style, combining hard rock grit with the vocal range typically found in classic symphonic metal. This effective combination distinguishes the band within their genre, creating an album that will resonate equally with audiences who enjoy rock, symphonic rock, and progressive power metal.
The previous album I covered, ‘The Zeramin Game’, signaled the beginning of something truly impressive, and this subsequent release certainly lives up to expectations.
